SYR Sees Busiest Month In Almost Three Decades

Syracuse, New York –The Syracuse Regional Airport Authority (SRAA) announced today that 250,207 passengers traveled through Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) in August, making it the busiest month the airport has seen in almost three decades. The last time the airport has seen more monthly passenger traffic was in August 1990 when 254,582 passengers traveled through the airport.

August 2019 passenger traffic at SYR is up 13.3% over August 2018. This continues the vigorous growth experienced in 2019, which has generated a year to date passenger increase of 12.8% over 2018 (January-August). It’s also important to note that traffic in 2018 was up 11.6% over 2017 passenger traffic.

While many factors have contributed to the robust augmentation of passenger traffic, SYR Executive Director, Jason Terreri points to a lesser-known component of air service development as being the main driver of this success story. “While SYR has indeed seen new seasonal and year round routes take flight in the past 12 months, the bulk of our passenger growth stems from our airline partners simply using larger aircraft with more seats on their routes.”

As an example, American Airlines is forecasting an 82% increase in mainline aircraft seats at SYR in October of this year compared to October 2018. These increases indicate a busy upcoming Thanksgiving and Holiday traffic season at SYR.
